Lorraine Mangione, PhD, Professor and Director of Practica in Counseling, Psychology, & Therapy at Antioch University’s New England campus, has recently led workshops and presentations for several practicum sites, a Veterans Administration Hospital, and an inpatient forensic hospital, focused on challenges and best practices in clinical supervision.
Mangione’s sessions emphasize the critical importance of the supervisory relationship, especially when difficult issues arise. Topics include competency concerns; supervisees’ feelings toward clients; questions related to diversity and identity; transference and countertransference; working outside one’s scope of competence; limited openness in supervision; and the ways today’s political climate can shape clinical work and supervision.
Clinical supervision has long anchored Mangione’s teaching, research, and practice. Through this work with practicum partners, she continues to strengthen one of the most foundational learning environments for students as they grow into ethical, reflective, and effective clinicians.
