HHELLO WORM Book JacketKari Percival ‘01 (New England, Environmental Science, General Science Teaching) released How To Say Hello To A Worm: A First Guide To Outside, a gardening picture book for ages 2-4. It was released on February 2, 2022, by Rise x Penguin Workshop at Penguin Random House.

“I was inspired to write this guide to gardening for ages 2-4 by my experience leading the Early Birds’ Garden Club at the Malden Community Garden,” said Percival. “I’m an environmental educator, and I invited families with very small kids who wanted to learn to grow food to garden with me. As we gardened together, I noticed what questions children and their parents had, and how we found the answers together. I wrote this book to inspire more kids and their parents to get their hands dirty.”

How To Say Hello To A Worm: A First Guide To Outside earned starred review in Publishers Weekly. “In this deceptively simple, sparkling debut (picture book), a group of young children plant a garden in raised beds and watch it grow…..Percival conveys the joy children can feel in working together, being outdoors, and eating food they’ve grown themselves”- Publishers Weekly Children’s Bookshelf starred review.
