Mindith R. Rahmat, Program Director and Core Faculty for the MA in Counseling Psychology (MACP) program at Antioch University Santa Barbara, has published an article in The Teaching Professor titled, “Students Should Leave Our Courses with More Than a Grade.”
In the article, Rahmat argues that course completion and a final grade do not guarantee lasting learning. She contrasts two end-of-term experiences—one focused on getting through required presentations and another centered on dialogue and reflection—to show how instructional choices shape what students carry forward. Rahmat draws on learning science research to emphasize retention and transfer, and she encourages faculty to make space for revisiting ideas, integrating knowledge, and helping students connect course material to who they are and how they will practice beyond the classroom.
Rahmat’s work centers on compassion-focused pedagogy and the creation of relational, intentional, and humanizing learning environments. Drawing on over 25 years of experience in mindfulness, movement, and trauma-informed practice, she is deeply committed to supporting both student growth and educator well-being.
