Jimmy Karlan Inspires Hands-On Science Learning Through “Very BIG tiny Challenge”

Jimmy Karlan

Jimmy Karlan, EdD ’82 (New England, MST with K–12 biology certification), Faculty Emeritus in Antioch’s Environmental Studies Department, continues to spark curiosity and wonder in young scientists. Recently featured in the Brattleboro Reformer, Karlan’s “Very BIG tiny Challenge” invited students to explore the natural world through close observation and creative storytelling. Using science journals, magnifiers, and a spirit of discovery, students turned ordinary objects like snail shells and tree bark into catalysts for learning and imagination.

During his 25-year tenure at Antioch, Karlan served as Core Faculty and directed the Science Teacher Certification Program for middle and high school educators. His work has long embodied Antioch’s commitment to experiential education and ecological literacy. This latest project reflects his enduring belief that “the most powerful science questions begin with wonder.”
