Joel M. Filmore, EdD, one of New England’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling’s newest faculty members, brings with him not only over a decade of clinical experience but a plethora of knowledge that culminated in the publication of his second co-edited book, Introduction to 21st Century Counseling: A Multicultural and Social Justice Approach.

When Filmore was approached by the publisher, Cognella Publishing, about the type of text he would create, he stated, “As a person of color, and Queer-identifying, one of the challenges I experienced as a Masters and Doctoral student was not seeing myself represented in the materials and theories in which I was immersed.” He went on to say, “I wanted to create an Intro to counseling text, written by people of marginalized populations, that not only utilized the most current research around multicultural counseling competencies, but allowed future counselors in training to have a more rounded, social-justice focused education.”

Published in 2022, this exciting new text won the Most Promising New Textbook Award from the Textbook & Academic Authors Association for 2022.
