Ali Corey and Lem Waston publish in the Journal of Higher Education Policy and Leadership Studies

Ali Corey,  Associate Professor of Applied Psychology and Program Director of Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and Lemuel Watson, Senior Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Vice Provost of Community Engagement and the Coalition of Common Good, at Antioch University, New England, have published a groundbreaking article, titled “Navigating Change and Trauma: Essential Leadership Insights for Higher Education,” in the Journal of Higher Education Policy And Leadership Studies.

Corey and Watson examine a range of critical issues impacting academic institutions, including financial pressures, demographic shifts, post-pandemic recovery, and systemic inequities. Recognizing the trauma and transformation experienced by higher education leadership, the article proposes an integrated approach that draws upon four influential leadership theories: Transformational, Servant, Adaptive, and Trauma-Informed Leadership.

Through a series of leadership vignettes, the article illustrates how these theories can be practically applied to address challenges such as economic crises, racial trauma, faculty resilience, and the ongoing transitions of post-pandemic education. The article offers strategies for creating inclusive, adaptive academic environments that align with the evolving needs of the workforce and students. This approach promotes sustainable success strategies and cultivates a culture of trust, collaboration, and equity in higher education.
