The Power of Narrative Evaluations (Not Grades)

At Antioch University, we know that learning can be important but also difficult. There are times when it’s frustrating and times when you may feel like you aren’t going to succeed. But it’s likely that you just haven’t found the right learning environment yet. We’re here to help with that. Our holistic and experiential philosophy on education means you can learn what you need to know for your career, not just what you’re supposed to remember for the next test.

Don’t Let a Lower GPA Hold You Back

If you’re worried about qualifying with an undergraduate GPA that’s not what you’d hoped for, or you’re trying to transfer with poor GPA concerns and want to be one of our adult learners, there’s a place for you. Apply, and let’s work together to see how we can help you reach all of your educational goals. Whether you’re trying to finish your undergraduate work or you want to go on for graduate studies, there’s a place for you here.

What is a Narrative Evaluation?

We do things a bit differently. Instead of providing you with a letter grade, we work off of narrative evaluations. What does that mean? In short, it means that our faculty provides students with direct and meaningful feedback about their performance in a course. Instead of getting a B and not really knowing why, you get an instructor who will explain how you performed in their course.

You’ll learn what you excelled in and any areas where you might need to improve your skills. This isn’t just a pass/fail opinion of the coursework you completed, either, but a clear and comprehensive explanation of your abilities and the depth of knowledge and understanding you expressed to your instructor during your coursework. That meets you where you are, helps create equity in the classroom, and gets you ready for the real world.

Professionals in their chosen careers need to receive and take in feedback, and nothing is ever really black and white as a pass/fail situation. You can build the muscles you need to be successful when you come to Antioch University. But we understand that some students who pursue graduate studies need letter grades and a GPA. If those are requested, we will assign letter grade equivalencies to your narrative evaluations, so you can move on with the studies you want to pursue.

Narrative Evaluations Create More Equity

A narrative evaluation meets students where they are, so they can make adjustments to improve their coursework over time, and get to where they need to be. We want all of our students to have the quality educational experience they deserve. Even if you’ve struggled before or haven’t been comfortable with more traditional types of grading, a level playing field and strong support await you here with us.

With all the programs at Antioch, you can choose what works for you and how you want to proceed. Whether you’re among adult learners looking to transfer with a poor GPA or you’re just starting out and worried about college grades, we’re here to help you find the program that can work for you.

Let Antioch Help You Reach Your Educational Goals

You can enroll in our online programs from anywhere, and if you want to be on campus, we have options in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and Seattle that offer our undergraduate programs. All graduate-level programs are online only. Don’t let past unpleasant experiences with college hold you back from completing your degree or moving on with your education.

Even if you’ve struggled in more traditional, test-based learning environments and your undergraduate GPA isn’t a good one, Antioch University gives you individualized attention and feedback so you can work toward your educational and career goals again. You may look at grad school with poor GPA concerns and not be sure if you can continue your education. But we have a program that will give you a higher chance of success.

We know not everyone handles studies and testing the same, and some people do well in class but poorly on traditional types of tests. That can harm their grades and discourage them from continuing to try. If that’s where you are in your educational journey, don’t give up. You haven’t tried attending Antioch University and considering all we can offer. We’re here to help and to make sure you have the best chance at seeing your educational goals and dreams come true.
