Anastasia Ashe, PsyD, teaching faculty and director of new student support for the Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology program at Antioch’s Santa Barbara campus published an article in the Journal of Sexual and Relationship Therapy titled, “Sensate focus: addressing potential preconceived notions of Black sexuality.”
The article looks at how stigmas and stereotypes of Black sexuality have influenced self and relational narratives associated with sex. Using phenomenology and the Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT) Outcome assessment, the research team conducted interviews about their understanding of good and meaningful sex to determine if internalized stereotypical narratives of Black sexuality were present. Identifying internalized racial and sexual stereotypes among the participants, researchers determined a significant influence in participants’ understanding of what good and meaningful sex is following their experience attending a sensate focus workshop.
