I want to open this year’s magazine, “The Democracy Issue,” with the declaration that our nation’s need for Antioch University, an institution that equips students with the knowledge and skills to lead positive change, is as great as it has ever been. At its best, Antioch brings hope in times of uncertainty. And it’s our alumni who bring that hope to the world and make it tangible. I take heart in the knowledge that Antiochians have long been—and continue to be—leaders of positive change.
As you read this magazine, you will meet some of your fellow alumni and learn about their work tackling some of the biggest challenges facing our species. I fill up with hope and resolve when I hear the many ways Antiochians are working for democracy, be it by educating about our nation’s history of racialized oppression, by protecting the environment and the food we eat, by pushing for more Indigenous representation in the halls of power, or by teaching Bangladeshi kids how to skateboard. Please also read the special feature on Antioch Works for Democracy, our months-long, pro-democracy project that reached thousands of Antiochians. When we come together and share our good works with each other, there is so much we can accomplish.
As we discuss actions that can benefit the world, I want you to think about someone in your life who might benefit from an Antioch education. Are they full of passion and purpose? Do they want to change the world? Are they willing to challenge themselves and pursue a career influenced by their values? If so, please send them our way. Let them know that they belong here. Our world needs more Antiochians, and our alumni are the greatest ambassadors for the value of an Antioch education.
On a personal note, this is the last Antioch Alumni Magazine for which I will be writing a Chancellor’s Message. Last June, I gave the Board of Governors a year’s notice of my intention to retire. As I write this, the search for Antioch’s next leader is well under way. I want to say that the chance to serve as Chancellor of this great institution has been the highest honor of my professional life. And I am excited to see where Antioch goes from here. I know that this great institution and the people who make it up will help lead our democracy and planet through the coming, vital years. Now, as much as ever, we need you all out there, working for justice and liberty and kindness and truth. Thank you for everything that you do.
Sincerely,

William R. Groves, JD
