Antioch MFA Earns Spot on MovieMaker Magazine’s Top Screenwriting Programs List for Second Year in a Row

For the second consecutive year, the dramatic writing concentration at the Antioch MFA in Creative Writing has been named one of MovieMaker’s 30 Best Film Schools. The prestigious annual list includes diverse institutions, many of which have dedicated film schools. The inclusion of the Antioch MFA highlights the unique low-residency option for students who still need to live their lives while growing as artists. The listing especially commented on the MFA’s emphasis on students pursuing projects out in their communities. The commendation says, “[T]his relatively new program’s Field Study component is a standout feature, particularly attractive to those pulled toward exploring social justice themes in their work.”

“This makes me so proud,” says Colette Freedman, Teaching Faculty in Dramatic Writing. “This is just a testament to the amazing team I work with; this wouldn’t have been possible without Joy Kecken and Ross Brown. And now we have John Cariani, who will help us make the list for the third year in a row.”

MFA Chair Lisa Locascio Nighthawk says, “Colette Freedman’s contributions to the program are clearly reflected in its ongoing success.” The Dramatic Writing Program stands out for its unique approach, combining rigorous craft training with a strong emphasis on personal storytelling and social impact. Designed for film, television, and theater writers, the program pairs students with industry professionals, offering real-world insights and hands-on guidance to help them develop compelling narratives. The curriculum’s low-residency model also provides flexibility, making it ideal for working professionals and aspiring screenwriters from diverse backgrounds.

Making the MovieMaker list builds on last year’s inclusion as one of three schools in the “Outstanding Screenwriting Training” that year’s list of the top 25 Best Film Schools (read our article about that honor on Common Thread.) Beyond its faculty, the program brings speakers for the 10-day residencies held every June and December. Recent guests include screenwriter Jen Lee (Frozen, Wish) and Eli Horowitz (Homecoming).

This latest recognition affirms Antioch’s growing reputation as a leading institution for dramatic writing. The program’s focus on inclusivity, originality, and mentorship sets it apart from traditional screenwriting schools, preparing graduates to make meaningful contributions to the entertainment industry. With back-to-back honors from MovieMaker, the Antioch MFA’s Dramatic Writing Program continues to gain momentum, proving that its innovative approach is shaping the next generation of storytellers.
