Richard Watts, director of the Center for Research on Vermont at the University of Vermont (UVM), will speak on Public Meltdown: The Story of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant, at the Environmental Studies colloquium on Friday, Nov. 1. The talk, free and open to the public, will be held at 11:30 a.m. in E101 at Antioch University New England (AUNE).
Watts will analyze the 2010 vote by the Vermont Legislature to shut down the nuclear power plant, focusing on the role of state governments, citizens, and activists in decisions about the nation’s aging nuclear power fleet.
Watts, an assistant research professor in UVM’s Department of Community Development and Applied Economics, and the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, has extensive experience in public policy and political campaigns as a campaign manager, journalist, and a consultant to government agencies, business groups and nonprofit organizations. He is the son of Heidi K. Watts, professor emerita at AUNE.
