Tom Julius, core faculty in AUNE’s Department of Education, will present Educating for Sustainability: An Ecological Approach to Teaching, on Thursday, February 21, at Antioch University Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, California.
The workshop will build on principles of the natural world to identify practical strategies for designing successful, safe, and sustainable classroom environments.
A new way of thinking about teaching and learning, Educating for Sustainability takes an ecological view of classrooms and schools. Drawing from what we know about living systems, it envisions students and teachers as connected to one another in a habitat for learning.
Julius has eighteen years experience learning from children as an elementary school teacher and fifteen years learning from his graduate students at AUNE. He was a founding board member of the Surry Village Charter School in Surry, New Hampshire, a result of his interest in curriculum, critical skills, place-based learning, and evaluation. His professional interests include place- and community-based learning and the ecology of classrooms and schools.
The event is free and open to the public; however space is limited. For more information, contact Kelly Pena, [email protected]
