Dr. Jessica Henderson Daniel, director of training in psychology at Children’s Hospital in Boston and associate professor in psychology at Harvard Medical School, will give a colloquium and teach a class in the Department of Clinical Psychology on Monday, April 9. The colloquium, titled Mentoring Women of Color, will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Community Room.
Daniel will talk about “Mentoring Across Differences: Crossing the Race, Ethnicity, and Gender Divides.” It is free and open to the public.
While at AUNE, Daniel will also teach a PsyD class, Treatment for Adolescent Girls of Color, leading a discussion of “Adolescent Girls of Color in Treatment: Incorporating Development in Context.”
Daniel’s career has focused on instruction, training, and mentoring. She is an adjunct associate professor in the clinical program at Boston University, where she advises the Minority Collective. At Harvard Medical School, she serves as advisor/mentor for the ALANA psychology interns and fellows at the affiliated training institutions. Daniel founded Next Generation, a mentoring group to increase the number of black women research psychologists who study black adolescents, in 1999.
In the American Psychological Association (APA), Daniel is the first black woman to serve on the board of directors; a past president of the Society for the Psychology of Women (Division 35); and a founding faculty member of the Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology, sponsored by the APA Women’s Office. In 2006, she served as the chair of the APA Presidential Task Force, Centering on Mentoring.
She was associate editor of the journal Cultural Diversity & Ethnic Minority Psychology and is now associate editor of Professional Psychology: Research and Practice. She is a co-editor of The Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women and Featuring Females: Feminist Analyses of Media.
Daniel has also won many awards, including the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Trust Award in 2011, the Toy Caldwell-Colbert Award for Distinguished Educator in Clinical Psychology in 2010, and the Ivan Mensh Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2010.
