The Department of Management, in conjunction with the Department of Environmental Studies, has scheduled its Community Meetings for the 2017-18 academic year. The Community Meeting Forum is an excellent opportunity for students, alumni, faculty, and guests to interact with community and business leaders on a fascinating array of topics. Past events have included guest speakers sharing experiences and expertise on many aspects of business and sustainability, ranging from impact investing to mindful leadership to climate change impacts on business and community. This year, students in AUNE’s Resource Management and Conservation program will be joining MBA in Sustainability students for these Community Meetings. Alumni of these academic programs are also invited to attend.
The Community Meetings are Saturdays during class weekends from 8:30 – 10:00 am in the AUNE Community Room.
September 16 – Workshop on Academic Writing
In this interactive workshop, John Dunham, AUNE Writing Center Coordinator will address critical components of successful academic writing. The Writing Center provides academic writing support for AUNE students. The Center’s mission is to help students become better writers, better thinkers, and better learners by providing peer feedback and support for all parts of the writing process.
October 14 – What’s Up at AUNE These Days?
Interim Provost Barb Andrews will present a “State of the School” session to bring students up to speed on a variety of programs and initiatives now underway or in development in and around AUNE. Taryn Fisher, Assistant Professor and MBA in Sustainability Program Director will also talk about her recent trip to Toronto for the second annual Global B Corp Academic Community Roundtable, where the theme was “The Role of the Academic Community in Scaling the B Corp Movement.” Taryn is a member of the B Corp Academic Community Roundtable Planning Committee and worked over several months with educators from other universities to plan the event. There will be plenty of opportunity for Q & A throughout.
November 11 – The Future of Competition with Anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson
Writer and cultural anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson, daughter of famed anthropologists Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson, will talk about sustainability and its implications for societies past, present, and future. Bateson is a Visiting Scholar at the Sloan Center on Aging & Work at Boston College and has served on multiple advisory boards dealing with climate change, including for the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
December 9 – Complexities of Natural Resource/Business Consultations
Charles Levesque, president of Innovative Natural Resource Solutions consulting firm in Boscawen NH, will discuss the complexities of Natural Resource/Business consultations. INRS specializes in assisting business, non-profit and government clients in resolving complex natural resource management and business challenges, and offers consulting services in renewable energy, advocacy, economic development, land protection and management, forest certification, and organizational management.
January 27 – The Conservation and Business Ethics of George Perkins Marsh, Frederick Billings, and Laurence Rockefeller
Christina Marts, Deputy Superintendent of Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, will lead a discussion on the combined conservation and business philosophies of George Perkins Marsh, Frederick Billings, and Laurence Rockefeller. Marts’ work focuses on conservation and partnerships, community engagement, and working agricultural and forest cultural landscapes.
February 24 – Applying Evaluative Thinking to Work as a Professional
What is “evidence-based practice” in organizations? Managers are under increasing pressure to employ evidence-based practices – which is often interpreted as adopting strategies that others have found effective. George Tremblay, Co-Director of Antioch’s Center for Behavioral Health Innovation (BHI), will discuss how he and his colleagues strive to help organizations identify high leverage learning opportunities in their own experience. Practitioners tend to believe strongly in what they do; inviting them to set aside their “promoting self” and adopt a more curious, learning posture is at the heart of BHI’s work. We’ll talk about how to reveal, examine, and test the assumptions that are driving our management decisions, and take evidence-based practice to a deeper level.
March 24 – Putting Our AUNE Degrees to Work – Lessons Learned
An alumni panel of MBA and RMC graduates will share their experiences and reflections of how their learning at AUNE has played a role in their career paths and work as sustainability advocates, and how it has impacted and influenced them as both people and professionals.
April 21 – MBA Practicum Presentations
Graduating students in the MBA in Sustainability program will present their Practicum projects to the Antioch community. Practica are year-long, self-designed, capstone projects encompassing research and application of theory to practice. Students, faculty, returning alumni, family and friends gather for this day of celebration and discussion.
