World renowned eco-photojournalist J. Henry Fair will appear at two special events in Keene: October 24 at Keene State College, and October 25 at Antioch University New England. Both events are free and open to the public.
- A presentation and slide show focusing on the craft, process, and intention of Fair’s work will take place at Keene State’s Alumni Center, 229 Main Street, at 7 p.m., Thursday, October 24.
- A meet-the-artist reception and book signing will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, October 25, at AUNE, 40 Avon Street. This event will celebrate the release of Whole Terrain’s newest volume, titled Heresy. Fair contributed the cover photo and a visual essay to this volume of Whole Terrain, AUNE’s award-winning journal of reflective environmental practice.
Through large-scale aerial photo shoots and accompanying documentary research, Fair’s work explores the environmental impact of our consumer society, with subjects ranging from the impact of gas drilling, coal mining, and factory farming to the detritus of tar sands, oil spills, and mountaintop removal. In small airplanes, he circles what he calls industrial scars and photographs the effects these operations have on our environment with a bird’s-eye perspective.
Fair authored The Day After Tomorrow: Images of Our Earth in Crisis, a collection of abstract images of environmental nightmares interspersed with essays by prominent authors, scientists, and environmentalists. His work has been published in the New York Times, magazines National Geographic, Vanity Fair, TIME, and New York, and featured on the Today television program and Marketplace radio program. Fair has had touring photography exhibits in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Whole Terrain is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. AUNE’s Department of Environmental Studies, which houses Whole Terrain and is the oldest graduate program in environmental studies in the country, is celebrating its fortieth year.
