AUSB’s First MA in Clinical Psychology Program Healthy Aging Cohort Graduates at Commencement

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Two years after launching the much-anticipated Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology Healthy Aging concentration, Antioch University Santa Barbara (AUSB) graduated its first class at the Commencement ceremony on Friday, June 21, 2013.

The MA in Clinical Psychology Healthy Aging program and several of its seven graduates were highlighted in the June 18th Santa Barbara News-Press column “Frank Talk for Seniors” by Frank Newton. The author and radio host is executive director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Santa Barbara and has worked with seniors in various capacities.

Newton quoted Elizabeth Wolfson, PhD, Chair of the MA in Clinical Psychology program, from a column he wrote in 2011.

“In view of the rapidly growing senior population,” she said, “we must teach more clinicians to become sensitive to the defining characteristics of the aging process. Our training will help clinicians address this from a holistic perspective that includes the total person—their mind, body, spirit, emotions, and psychological needs.”

In the article, he also interviewed Healthy Aging graduates Andrew Nelson, Kelly Wildowsky, Betty Purify, and Monica Clipperton about their future plans working with the elderly population. The other four graduates were James Fields, Erika Barragan, Leah Byrne, and Natalie Long.

“People are living longer; our society is going to change tremendously in a variety of ways; and it is aging specialists like these from Antioch who will be in the very heart of these dramatic societal dynamics,” Newton concluded.
