Three doctoral graduates from the AUNE Department of Environmental Studies—Susan Leopold, Alison Ormsby, and Lee Ann Woolery—are among several collaborators presenting a workshop at the Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary in Rutland, Ohio, on October 1-2, 2015. The workshop, “Nurturing Your Botanical Sanctuary,” is an opportunity for members of the Botanical Sanctuary Network and the Sacred Seeds Network (organizations that support conservation of these sites through publicity, advice, and training opportunities) to gather and learn important ethnobotanical skills including data collection, management and stewardship, education and outreach, and conservation and cultivation.
Botanical sanctuaries play a critical role in the conservation of endangered medicinal plants as many of these sacred sites contain species not found elsewhere. For centuries, traditional healers have used these plants, but conservation efforts are critical to ensure they survive for future generations.
Susan Leopold, Executive Director of United Plant Savers and Director of the Sacred Seed Sanctuary, is scheduled to present on the subject of stewardship. Alison Ormsby, an environmental educator and sacred natural sites specialist will offer an overview of sacred groves around the world, and Lee Ann Woolery, Community Arts Specialist at University of Missouri Extension and Expedition Leader at EcoArt Expeditions will explore the subject of patterns in nature.
